HOUSE-TRAINING YOUR PUPPY EFFECTIVELY
So you have your new puppy and everything is just adorable, except the big question – how do I house-train him quickly and with the minimum of fuss? Well, firstly do away with those newspapers or training pads. The quickest and easiest way to housetrain a puppy is to get him to go outside from day one.
Take him outside regularly (every hour) throughout the day and make a big fuss of him as he goes to the toilet. You can introduce your cue word as he goes (the word is entirely up to you, if you need some ideas here are some words that I know people use… “toiletâ€, “go busyâ€, “go quicklyâ€, “wee weeâ€). The more often he hears this word along with his action he will start to associate the two and you will be able to get him to go when and where you like in the future.
If your puppy has an accident indoors, make no fuss and NEVER punish him for it. He will not understand and you will just make him anxious and confused. Remember, he’s just a baby and cannot yet hold his bladder, so punishment is akin to punishing a baby for going in its nappy! Just clean it up quietly using a pet cleaner, not bleach or disinfectant – this contains ammonia and will actually encourage your puppy to go in the same place again.
If you catch your puppy in the act of going to the toilet indoors, distract him quickly and urgently and get him to follow you to the garden. Shout anything that will get his attention, but do not be aggressive with your voice as this will just frighten him.
