CROSS BREED PROFILE: Jack Russell x Border Collie
A Jack Russell Collie cross will be a small to medium size loyal, good natured and affectionate dog which will be good with older children. Training should be fairly easy.
I adopted my border jack from a shelter in Washington, IA 1 1/2 years ago. At the time we didn’t know borderjacks were a type of “designer dog” and known to be a bit difficult. Due to them getting bored easily. I would say they are extremely easy to train and full of lots of energy. They need daily walks so they don’t become destructive or a big yard to run around it.
My borderjack, Sadie, is 3 years old and 55lbs. However she has no idea she is 55lbs as she likes to get on laps and lay on the back of the couch. I think in her mind she is small like a Jack Russell. She likes to heard (like a border collie) anything that runs by her and she can catch anything that runs by. She is so fast. She loves her ball and will jump 7feet in the air to grab it. She also does the Jack Russell jump on people to greet them. Quite a site to see a 55lb dog jump up and look you in the eye.:) She eats 1 cup of food in the morning and 1cup at night. She sleeps about 11 hours a day and gets along with everyone…..even cats. Everyday I am amazed by her intelligence and belly laugh at her sassy demanding self. Did I mention she only barks when she is trying to communicate? BorderJacks can be quite a handful but the intellect and fun you get back is totally worth it.
I hope this information helps and if you have any questions please feel free to ask.

I have 2 Jack Russell/ Collie crosses. They are 2 brothers called Digger and Smudge. You can't see it but Digger in the kennel has a big white collar like a Collie. Digger's a bit chubby but they are both very friendly and love to play and walk and Smudge can jump very high. They're both very furry with big bushy tails. I've had lots of people comment on how nice they look. Love them so much

Hello my name is Tara and I have a lovely Jack Russell cross Border Collie called Smudge who is now 3yrs (Aug 2011). Had him since he was 7 weeks and I would not change him for the world! I love him sooo much and he has become a great part of my little family! He looks more Jack with the markings of the Collie and has both the traits of the breeds. He is VERY friendly with both people, dogs and other animals. Is quick, loves his ball, very smart, I love teaching him new tricks. Tho he is like a big Jack Russell he is like a lapdog! always trying to lay on me when he gets the chance! loves his cuddles. Placed 2nd (twice) and 3rd at two dog shows. Is great with my 1year old (Aug 2011) I think this is a great cross breed and I would def have another one! I have always loved Border Collies but I love Border Collie crosses my 1st dog was a Border Collie cross Lab called Flike she is now 11yrs but lives with my parents as I got her when I was still at school. Fun, loyal, good natured, loving, and smart, Jack Russell cross collie makes great pets! Also I got Smudge from a Farm in Barnsley UK he had 1 sister, who looked alot like him, and two bothers who looked more collie, one back and white the other like Smudge. I would love to see a photo of them and see how they turned out. If you think your dog could be Smudges sister or brother (born about 30th Aug 2008. will be 3yrs) please do get in contact! Thank you. We rescued Charlie from second chance in Derby in September, we wasnt told anything about his background other than he was from a welsh puppy farm , was very , very nervous and approx 3 months old .In the first few weeks we had him he was shy , reserved and spent most of his time shaking in his cage…. Three months down the line and things are very different !!! He is the most energetic , intellagent and loyal dog you could ever wish for. He has responded well to training and has mastered the basic commands with ease, we are now just about to start agility. He has a strong collie instinct and is a one master dog , and will try and herd any thing that moves , after saying that he is excellent with our two boys who are aged 8 and 3 years. He was house trained within 2 weeks and only barks when needing to go out and do his buisness. He is very energetic , needs lots of walks and off lead running ….this suits us though as we love being outdoors and with a young family fits in with our lifestyle. It been good to read so many other peoples accounts of their colliejacks , and I’m now convinced that Charlie is a collie x jack russell.
We have the most wonderful Jack Russell x Boarder Collie called Dave! My two favourite breeds in one! We resued him in East Sussex from the Blue Cross. He is the best dog I have ever had. He ticks every box. He is great with our two boys 7 & 5. Loves his walks but also nice and quiet at home. Comes to work with me every day. We are taking him to France next year in our Motorhome.
Hello i know its not a reply but was wondering if anyone could tell me what this breed is like with babys ??
I have a JRT / collie cross called Gypsy. She is 8 years old and such a loving dog. She does flyball, is fast and loves to be cuddled. She is excellent with my 4 year old.
we have had a 3 year old border jack rescue dog for just over a year now. opting to rescue rather than go to a breader, you get what you get. luckily we got a great, loving dog. VERY hyper and attention demanding. much more than i expected. especially since he’s our first ever pet. but my partner and i are active and we adapted quickly. over the last year he’s gone from a skinny, unsure rescue to a confident, strong king of the house. we received a lot of love and loyalty in return.
if you can handle the energy. and be warned, it’s A LOT. this breed is a great choice.
We have recently recieved a bundle of fun as a puppy from the rescue centre a beutifull tri colour collie/jack cross, his name is toby and we had him out tonight 25/12/10 and fireworks were going off left right and center. I served my country in the forces and still got a shock from home grown bangers while walking toby, he stood back on his haunches looked to my posture and carried on regardless. they are sensitive and loving, loyal and true you will never find a better companion.
We have a border jack we got from a rescue centre 2 years ago. She’s now about 3 years old. She’s recently started to be a bit aggressive with particular dogs. She seems to go for more vulnerable dogs. She seems to be mixing up her collie and jack russell instincts. Does anyone have advice on how to stop this behaviour? Thanks for any help.
I Have a Border Collie X Jack Russel. Her Name Is Karley, I Got her From Carmartheshire In Wales. i Wouldnt Change Her for The World. we have got a jackrussell/collie and she is only 16 weeks old .she is not reily big yet ,but we still love her. we got her in ireland, mayo, ballyhaunus rescue centre. she is the runt of the pak, but that dosent make us stop lovin her. she is a little rascle, she eats my moms shoes, Shh dont tell her. we bring her for a very long walk every day. ‘misty’ is her name. we love her so much. we wud even die 4 her.
Had a Jack Russell/Border Collie cross for 17 years. Bought from a farm on Dartmoor. She grew up with our children who were aged 5 & 11 when we got her. A more intelligent, obedient, lively, protective and loving dog you couldn’t wish for. Best dog we ever had, we still miss her 6 years after losing her.
We bought a Jack Russel, but have since realised (through most people’s comments and the fact that she looks like a Collie that has been shrink-wrapped with JR legs…) that she MUST be a Collie cross. She is 7 months old and is as fast as a bullet. She is fabulous with our 2 children (10 and 16yrs old) and our cat. She is very very boucy when she meets people and other dogs and does ‘nip’ when she gets too excited. I know this can be trained out of her though. Her temperament is already fantastic, she loves to cuddle up on the settee with the 4 of us. I wouldn’t swap her for all the money in the world. I recommend this croos breed! I wish I knew how to post a picture of her on here as she is so pretty
Hi, I own a jack russel-collie cross called Ginny. She is now 4 months old, lovely natured but does tend to nip ALOT whilst playing! She learns very quickly and was house trained within a few weeks. She is really lovely and I love her to bits. Would recommend them to anybody as she is reeeaaallly cute!!
hello,
i speak a verry litle bit englisch sorry!
i have a female pupy jack russel x border collie born 15/10/2009 great
We rescued a 3 year old Jack Russel which had come from Wales to a local centre. Soon found it was not pure JR, probably a Collie Cross. Superb dog, so agile and like a flying bullet when going mad. Leaps from yards away. Likes food of any type, we have a problem stopping him eating bird seed or anything we drop or leave within reach, which can be on a table 3 ft high. Getting very well trained now after a few messes. Has run 5 miles with my daughter, not even tired.
