The Foreclosure Pet
Unfortunately, the global recession has arrived. Foreclosures are occurring all over the world and during these difficult economic times, pets have become the new victim. There is a new term for animals that are left in abandoned homes by their owners, “Foreclosure Petsâ€. These pets are losing their families. Often, a lost job or other economic problems necessitate a move, which doesn’t include the pet. Not only is abandoning a pet illegal, it is morally reprehensible. There are an estimated 231 million pets in the United States alone (excluding fish) in 71 million homes. One in seven pet owners is considering cutting the emotional bond with their pet and giving them up. What a sad time for all concerned! Rescue centers are experiencing cramped quarters or are just plain full. Some have actually had to turn people away, which increases the ‘dumping’ of animals. Tough times often require tough decisions, but the wrong decision causes people shame and embarrassment in the end. In the U.S.A & the UK., already half of the 8 million dogs and cats that are placed in shelters are killed every year. That number is expected to rise as long as the recession continues. If you suspect your neighbour may be thinking of abandoning their pet, ask them if they have considered all options. Offer to help them; give them brochures from your local rescue center. On the other hand, if you see an abandoned foreclosure pet, please report it to animal control or your local rescue center.
For those who are facing foreclosure, there are a number of responsible options available to you. While we recognise that foreclosures are stressful, it is important that pet owners don’t lose their sense of responsibility. You would be surprised how many people would take your pet in, rather than see it suffer. If you can no longer afford your pet, call your local rescue . Many will hold your pet and allow you to visit while your situation becomes more stable. There’s always a better way out. Call a friend, a neighbour, or a rescue centre and make plans for your pet!
It’s become even more crucial finding homes for pets. If you want a pet and are able to give a needy pet a good home, there is no better time than now to go to your local rescue center and adopt that pet. Everyone wins. The Center wins because they will have one more available space. You win, because you and your family will enjoy the affection and companionship of a loveable new pet. The pet wins, they gain a wonderful new family and the love and security they deserve. Adopt today!
