How To Rehome Your Dog / Pet
Why Rehome?
Getting a new dog is an exciting time for any family and we always plan to keep that dog forever! Sadly, this isn’t always the case. The reasons for this are many. Sometimes it’s a divorce, perhaps we’re moving away or into a small place where dogs just aren’t allowed. For a number of reasons, maybe we just can’t take care of our dog anymore. We treat our pets as one of the family, so the decision to give them away can be very difficult, Traumatic almost. However, rehoming a dog can work out just fine for you and the dog if you follow these simple guidelines.
How to Find a Good home…
Choosing a new home for your dog is a critical pick. Ideally you need to find more than just one suitable family who want to adopt your pet, as you will want several choices. Ask your vet, perhaps he knows someone looking for a pet and can recommend a good home. Put up ads in pet shops, or local news agents. Tell people. Tell your friends, your corner shop manager, tell anybody who will listen. Word of mouth is great because people you know will want to help you find a great home for your dog. They will probably give you their friend’s names. Advertise in your community newspaper. There are also our websites getsetpet.co.uk that can help by posting information about your pet. You may get lucky and find a home close to yours where you can ask for visiting rights. Perhaps the local rescue centre knows a good family who is looking for your type of dog/pet.
Once you have found someone to take your dog, schedule a visit to their home and bring your dog to meet them. Interview them. Have your dog and yourself meet all of the family members. Do they like dogs? Do they plan to keep the dog for its entire life? The last thing you want is a short-term home. Does your dog like their place and the new family? Have they ever had a dog? Do they have a dog now? How does your dog like this other dog? Does it look like they will be pals? What is the family’s motivation to taking in your dog? Do they simply just love dogs? You want to minimize stress for your dog and you are going to want to feel a measure of trust in these people. You are letting them have something precious. You want a safe and loving home for your dog. And remember, your dog has no say. Not every family is suited to take a rehome dog, so choose wisely.
